Special select Old Growth American Black Cherry (Prunus Serotina) from Allegheny State Forest, Pennslyvania. 12 to 15-inches (30 to 37.5cm) wide x 8-feet (2.4m) long boards stored since 2012. "Allegheny State Forest is where the finest, clearest, deepest color tones and largest Black Cherry trees are found and harvested. The cherry is Prunus Serotina, Black Cherry. There are a lot of different species, most not suitable for lumber. Many term it American Black Cherry or American Wild Cherry as to not confuse it with Cherry not indigenous to the US, like Jatoba / Brazilian Cherry that is also used for lumber. It takes a lot of old growth [American Black Cherry] trees to yield [this quality at] over 12-inch-wide by 8-feet long boards... This is not to be confused with 'clear cutting' or depleting our forests---questions I am asked daily! These timbers are all highly-regulated and harvested by generation foresters. By thinning the canopy of these trees harvesting at maturity before they die, it leaves room, nutrients, and sunlight for the younger surrounding trees. The foresters we work with have been sustainably managing their land for many generations and it is their passion and livelihood to continue growth and succession for many more generations to come. One reason I do not like using some exotics, on the contrary, like Jatoba Cherry, is that these are not regulated so you never know what you are going to get or what that source truly is." - Kelly Doody, DC Twin |
